There Are Answers!

Have you ever wondered…

  • How we know something is wrong?
  • What happened to the dinosaurs?
  • Where the races came from?
  • Why there is death and suffering?
  • How the fossils formed?
  • Why math and science work?
  • Whether all religions lead to heaven?

I certainly did! I struggled with all of these and many others–and found the Bible offers solid answers to each one of life’s questions. It gives us a framework on which we can build our framework–a framework that makes sense of the universe.

I would encourage you to read it and examine its truth claims for yourself. Begin reading or listening to the Bible online or from your iPhone or iPad. The Gospel of John is a good place to start.

Join me now on a brief journey into examining just a little of how the Bible makes sense of the world around us.

HOW DO WE KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG?
What is the standard for right and wrong? If we’re not accountable to a Creator, then there is not one. We can each do what we want to do. Who is to say killing is wrong? Survival of the fittest is the only law.

Some might argue that the society and the laws of the society determine right or wrong. So if the society as a whole embraces mass genocide, does that make it right? Was Hitler doing good? He had his society behind him. And who, ultimately, can tell someone they’re wrong if they decide that the society doesn’t determine right and wrong? If there is no absolute authority for right and wrong, we end up in a quagmire.

The Bible, however, gives a clear foundation for morality, as it tells us we are accountable to our Creator and His Law. Anything that goes against His nature and revealed will is wrong.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DINOSAURS?
Dinosaur bones don’t come with labels or explanations about what happened to them. The people who dig up those bones come up with theories based on their preconceived beliefs about the world. When we start from a biblical worldview of dinosaurs, we end up with an explanation that fits with what we see in the fossil record.

WHERE DID THE RACES COME FROM?
Why do some of us have light skin…and others dark? Misunderstanding “races” has been the cause of countless atrocities throughout history. For instance, Hitler used Darwinism and the belief that certain people groups had “evolved” further than others as justification for many of the atrocities of World War II.

According to the Bible, however, all of us are really of one race–the human race. The differences in our skin, eyes, hair, etc., were caused by different people groups spreading out across the earth after the Tower of Babel.

WHY IS THERE DEATH AND SUFFERING?
Why do things bad things happen? Death and suffering surround us–is it God’s fault?

Once again, the Bible offers answers. It teaches us that God created a perfect universe–a world without suffering or death. But man’s sin brought death and suffering into the world. It’s an intrusion upon God’s creation–an intrusion God Himself came to earth as a man to pay the penalty for and redeem man from.

HOW DID THE FOSSILS FORM?
Read many science books, and you’d get the idea that fossils and Carbon-14 dating prove that the earth is millions of years old. In reality, fossils don’t prove anything. They are simply dead bones that we attempt to understand through our belief system. Take a look at the article on worldwide flood evidence and on the one on Carbon-14 dating below for information on how these actually make complete sense in a biblical worldview and a young universe–how, in fact, the biblical flood explains perfectly what we find in the fossil record.

WHY DO MATH AND SCIENCE WORK?
Although we often tend to separate them, math and science go hand in hand. We wouldn’t bother to learn our multiplication facts unless they actually applied in real life. All around us, there are consistencies. The universe operates according to a predictability–and that predictability allows us to record it using math. Without this predictability, modern science would be impossible! We couldn’t build airplanes if gravity did not operate in a consistent way :)

Yet why is the universe consistent?

The Bible teaches us that God created all things and that He holds them together by the power of His Word (Genesis 1; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:3). It also tells us that God never changes–that He is a consistent, faithful God (Malachi 3:6). In a biblical worldview, the universe is consistent because a consistent, all-powerful God holds it together.

If we had an inconsistent god or no god at all, it would make no sense why there are consistencies in the universe. After all, if the universe is just a random collection of atoms, why is there such order and consistency?

The Bible also explains why man is able to develop math. In a biblical view, our brains are not just the product of random chance. Instead, the Bible says God made man in His image, capable of subduing the earth. Thus we’d be able to, in a limited way, observe and categorize the orderly workings of the universe using math.

The Bible makes sense out of the consistencies that make math and science possible.

DO ALL RELIGIONS LEAD TO GOD?
We tend to think that it doesn’t matter what we believe–that if we all just believe our own thing, it will all turn out right in the end.

This is a lie–it absolutely does matter what we believe.

There can’t be multiple conflicting truths, or each would cease to be true. I can’t have been at the store last night at 6 p.m. and have been at home last night at 6 p.m. I either have a box of crackers in the cabinet or I don’t. Both cannot be true.

The Bible makes it very clear that Jesus is the truth and that there’s only one way to Heaven–through Jesus Christ, God’s Son. John 14:6 says, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Notice Jesus didn’t say He was one way out of many–He claimed to be the only way. And when God speaks, we’d better listen.

But aren’t all the worlds’ religions close? Are they really different?

When looking at the different religions, keep in mind that the best lies are those with elements of the truth. They all do have elements of the truth, but you’ll notice that every religion except for true Christianity is based on man’s efforts. Man has to do something, think something, or somehow earn his way to Heaven.

The Bible, however, teaches us that man cannot do anything to save himself–and that is why Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came and died in our place. It’s a message of God’s redemption, not one of man’s ability to earn his own way into God’s favor.

Note that many people have taught Christianity as a works-based religion, but this is not what the Bible actually teaches. I would encourage you to delve into its pages to see what it says for yourself.
